In her latest exhibition, "Daydreaming with a chance of rain," Rebecca Marshall explores myths, symbols and landscape ecology to delve into themes of love, joy, connection, and memory.
Marshall’s creative process starts by immersing herself in chromatic atmospheres and navigating the emergence of forms within these spaces. In this methodology, the colour fields serve as foundational canvases upon which figures and objects find their visual and psychological orientation, resulting in the cultivation of abstracted narratives. Throughout her body of work, recurring shapes traverse the canvas, forming an unbroken thread that weaves back and forth, uniting various elements and ideas.
Marshall's collection of diverse imagery spans symbols of beauty and femininity, encompassing motifs that evoke feelings of connection and emotion. Her sources draw from the rich tapestry of art history, the enigmatic symbolism of tarot, the aesthetic world of design, and the mundane yet profound experiences of everyday life. The exhibition serves as a conduit, inviting viewers to engage in a state of remembrance, tapping into the enigmatic dreamscape of the subconscious.
The resulting artworks give rise to nonlinear narratives as they meticulously assemble elements and materials, ultimately retelling a story that resides in the space between the tangible world of reality and the ethereal realm of dreams.
Rebecca Marshall was a finalist in the Sulman Prize at the National Gallery of NSW, 2023; a semi finalist in the Lester Art Prize, 2019 and a finalist in the Churchie National Emerging Art prize in 2017 at QUT Art Museum, Brisbane. Marshall was also an Arts Grant recipient from Kingston Arts in 2023. Marshall’s work is held in private collections nationally and internationally.
